Vacation Sunscreen vs. Australian Gold: Which is Better?

Summer is flying around the corner, and there are many options to keep your skin happy and healthy!

Today, we’re reviewing two sunscreen options, Vacation Sunscreen and Australia Gold, to determine which one offers you the best in quality, protection, and price.

A good sunscreen is essential to keeping the largest organ you have safe – your skin! So before you head off to the beach, let’s review what makes a great sunscreen, and then dive into the product comparison.

What makes a great sunscreen?

When selecting the best sunscreen for your skin, it’s important to make sure that it has the following features:

  • SPF Protection against UVA and UVB rays
  • Ingredients that suit your skin type
  • Comfortable to wear with a non-greasy formula
  • Tested for safety (and cruelty-free)
  • Easy to apply
  • Looks and smells great!

Let’s explore a couple of these features in a little more detail:

A quality sunscreen will offer a range of SPF protection levels to choose from, and provide broad-spectrum protection by protecting against both UVA and UVB rays.

Dermatologists recommend using an SPF of at least 30, which Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, MD, a dermatologist practicing in New York, calls "the magic number". SPF 15 blocks about 93 percent of UVB rays, while SPF 30 blocks about 97 percent of UVB rays. The ADA recommends an SPF of 30 or higher.”

Mineral sunscreens or those containing natural ingredients provide great options for those with sensitive skin, who may struggle with harsher chemical-based sunscreens.

Cruelty-free product testing

Testing is an important part of ensuring the dermatological safety of a product and ensuring it’s suitable for use on the skin and does what it says – protecting you from the sun!

However, it’s important that these testing processes are carried out in a way that is both environmentally friendly and cruelty-free – meaning that it is NEVER tested on animals.

Look and feel

Lastly, of course, we all want to be comfortable on the beach, in the pool, and also while participating in water sports! Great sunscreen should offer all of the above, plus be comfortable and long-lasting.

With those features in mind, let’s jump into the comparison of Vacation and Australian Gold’s sunscreen products.

Vacation sunscreen

The first product selection we’re going to check out comes from Vacation. Vacation labels its product as “The World’s Best Smelling Sunscreen”, and they’re all about making sunscreen a luxury experience. So, how do they stack up?

According to reviews, Vacation’s sunscreen is a great smelling lotion. This makes sense given that Vacation offers a range of other products focused on great smells and relaxation, including candles and perfumes.

Vacation offers both a “classic” and a “mineral” sunscreen option, in addition to a couple of other non-sunscreen products for summer.

Where this company excels in luxury, it lacks in actual sunscreen products.

Both of their two sunscreen options come in lotion form and offer SPF 30 protection. While this is a great start, it doesn’t offer any choice of application method, SPF level, tanning options, scents, or anything else.

A good sunscreen line should ideally offer many different levels of SPF protection to provide the customer with protection at whatever level they need it.

A bottle of Vacation’s classic lotion goes for $18, and a bottle of their mineral lotion goes for $20. These are both a 3.4 fl oz bottle, which is considered a high-end price for sunscreen.

One customer review from The Cut states that the sunscreen is all about fun: That’s the ethos behind Vacation, a new sunscreen steeped in retro ’80s nostalgia. Visit its website and you’ll be taken back to the time of Club Med, big hair at the beach, and talking on giant brick cell phones while wearing ultra-high-rise bikinis.” The writer of the review also claims that the lotion is scented as a throwback to a “classic” sunscreen smell.

What do experts say?

Vacation Sunscreen was developed in conjunction with dermatologist Elizabeth Hale. She claims to have the best skincare science has to offer, stating that Vacation uses a unique “formulation process to update everything that you love about sunscreens of the past with the best of modern skincare science.”

Who’s it for?

Vacation Sunscreen is for the beachgoer or pool chiller who values experience and luxury. There aren't many protection level options, so this sunscreen would fit more of a “one size fits all” labeling.

This is a much higher-end price for sunscreen, so this is for someone who doesn’t mind spending a little extra for that classic sunscreen vibe.  This is also a shorter-lasting product, so we don’t recommend it to those participating in active pastimes.

Australian Gold

Next, we’re checking out the product range from Australian Gold, and we were immediately struck by the contrast in the variety of offerings!

Australian Gold was originally sold in surf and beach shops along the coast of the sunshine state, Florida, and the company has grown to become an international seller, and they take pride in their high-quality line of options.

Australian Gold offers an extensive range of classic and mineral sunscreen options varying from SPF 30 to SPF 70, in addition to tanning products with SPF. Their line includes:

This wide range of products makes sure there’s a sunscreen product for everybody, whatever your SPF, application, tanning, or activity-based needs!.

Australian Gold prioritizes creating products that are immensely comfortable to wear while using natural ingredients to nourish your skin.

“Our mineral lotions offer a non-sticky, transparent application with a powder matte finish. Our natural sprays are also non-sticky and dry quickly so you can apply quickly and get back to your active lifestyle outdoors. The Botanical line is Hypoallergenic, Dermatologist Tested and Pediatrician Tested, making these products safe for children, teens, and adults alike.”

Originally designed with surfing in mind, Australian Gold is one of the longest-lasting options on the market, meaning you may need to reapply less frequently – a winner for all you water sports lovers!

Lastly, the company uses non-cruelty testing and never tests their products on animals. Overall, we have to say we’re impressed.

We couldn’t find many cons for this sunscreen line, but we did find that the mineral option sunscreen bottles they offer are slightly smaller than their classic sunscreens.

An 8 fl oz bottle of SPF 50 classic sun protection from Australian Gold costs $10.79, and a 5 fl oz bottle of mineral sunscreen goes for $16.99, making Australia Gold a cost-efficient and high-quality choice.

One reviewer wrote how they loved the choices made by the company: “I love Australian Gold Botanical SPF 50 Mineral Lotion. It’s hypoallergenic and is reef-friendly, cruelty-free, oxybenzone free, and paraben-free.”

What do experts say?

Cruelty-free skincare expert, Ivy Rose, claims that Australian Gold’s sunscreen offerings are an absolute win: “The fact that this isn’t greasy at all is already SUCH a win to me. My hands don’t feel gross, and neither does my skin after applying. I was so impressed by that alone that it was already a solid product in my book.”
